Mobile video game party spices up boring birthdays

September 15, 2009 by Big Island Weekly

When invited to a Hawaiian birthday party, there's no surprise what the afternoon will hold - beach park with picnic tables and barbecue pits, an inflatable castle, Costco balloons and Auntie serving up her best malasadas. One Hilo woman has a different vision for the future of Big Island birthday parties, and it looks a little like Laser Tag competitions and Guitar Hero face-offs.

"Kids are tired of going to a bowling alley or roller skating for their birthdays. We are offering everyone the chance to have a rock star birthday party at an affordable price," said Paula Thorne the owner of Games2U on the Big Island.

Combining everything the modern kid loves, Games2U is a mobile entertainment unit that provides a video gaming theater, Laser Tag and other kid-friendly games. Thorne can park her party-on-wheels at almost any location whether it is a front or back yard, street or park. Each party vehicle features multiple flat-screen TVs inside and outside of the truck with some of the more popular video games on XBox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii.

The gaming theater can accommodate up to 12 players, and latest games available appeal to kids of all ages, including The Biggs, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Madden '09, NBA Live '09, Resistance: Fall of Man, Guitar Hero 3, Tiger Woods '09, Gears of War, Halo 3, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, Mario Party 8 and Wii Playground.

The Laser Tag game accommodates up to 20 players and the guns function in daylight or dark. Games2U also provides partygoers with a giant Hamsterball to roll around in, customized air cannons to shoot, or play with a futuristic version of the pinata, which churns out candy when a player hits the target with a ball. Parties can be designed with only one of the games available or a combination of several.

With prices starting at $199 for one hour, Games2U also provides game coaches to oversee the entire experience and personally manage the playtime throughout the event. This service allows parents and event coordinators the chance to relax and enjoy the party.

Thorne hopes this new business venture will not only appeal to people for children's birthday parties, but corporate functions and school events as well.
